The process

The Same Steps on Every Pre-1978 Job

360 Assessment & Age Check

The home's age and the surfaces the work will disturb are identified up front, so lead-safe setup is in the scope and the price before work begins.

Renovate Right & Acknowledgment

The homeowner receives EPA's Renovate Right pamphlet and signs an acknowledgment before work starts.

Contain the Area

Work areas are sealed with plastic sheeting, and warning signs are posted.

Work Lead-Safe, Clean & Verify

Dust is controlled during the work, then cleaned with HEPA vacuums and wet methods and checked with EPA cleaning verification.

Document the Job

Records of the work practices are kept for at least three years.

What the photo shows

Where the Rules Apply

Weathered, peeling paint on original wood siding and trim: the kind of surfaces federal rules cover in homes built before 1978, when lead-based paint was still in residential use. Window and door replacement, siding and trim work, remodels that open walls, painting preparation, and plumbing that cuts into painted surfaces all trigger lead-safe work practices in these homes.

Sand Star Services is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, certified only for purposes of Section 402 of the Toxic Substances Control Act to conduct lead-based paint renovation, repair, and painting activities. This certification does not cover lead abatement, inspection, or risk assessment. EPA certification is not an endorsement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
